Funeral Home Records

Mr. Larkin will discuss information that a funeral home may have on record and the kinds of questions that need to be asked when researching our ancestors. He will also tell us what records a funeral also does not have and what they may have but cannot release. He will discuss the differences between the kinds and ways different funeral homes keep records and how they are different today from in the past. He will also discuss the possible fees involved in accessing records. Much of his presentation will be Q & A so please bring your questions! He will bring enough handouts for participants

Mr. Larkin’s family has been in funeral home services since 1885. He began in the business in 1982. His job was to plant petunias at the cemetery. He has been working with Dignity Memorial since 1993 and has had many jobs with the company. He has been General Manager with them since July of 2007.

Guide to Cemetery Research

“Cemetery research is a crucial family history skill. Tombstones are monuments to our ancestor's lives and may include key genealogical clues engraved in the stone. Follow these guidelines for a successful "walk through the tombstones" both online and off-line.”


Presented by: Janet Camarata

Janet is a genealogist with over 25 years experience. She is a seminar presenter and trainer in genealogy societies across Washington and supported genealogy by volunteering in a variety of ways – seminar presenter, educator, newsletter editor, program coordinator and past-president of South King County Genealogical Society (SKCGS). She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and the New York Genealogical Society and is a graduate of the University of Washington Genealogy and Family History program. She has a B.A. (Education) degree from Central Washington University and a Master’s degree from Antioch University. She also taught within The Boeing Company and at the University of Phoenix.

Janice Blackhurst has more than 30 years’ experience in genealogy research and has been working professionally as a genealogist for the past 8 years. She started her business Genea In A Bottle in 2009 (www.geneainabottle.com) and has completed many projects for individual clients and subcontracted to companies such as Genealogyfreelancers.com , Genealogists.com, HeirSearch and Sogeni S.A. located in Switzerland. Janice became an accredited Genealogist (AG®) in 2014 accrediting in the Gulf South United States. She is a member of the International Commission for the Accreditation of Genealogists, the Association of Professional Genealogists and a member of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. She has presented many lectures in the Seattle area and at Family History Expos. She especially loves researching in her accredited area but has broad research experience in all of the U.S. and many international countries. Due to the history of the U.S. south, she has wide experience with Spanish records and documents and Hispanic genealogy. Her international research projects have included ancestries in England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Mexico, Spain, France, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Poland and the Caribbean. Her background in Spanish is a great benefit in researching records in other languages. She also spends many hours volunteering as a Family History Consultant for the LDS church, and presents often at the Susan Woodin Chapter of the NSDAR.
